There is a famous saying, “it’s the journey and it’s the journey alone that matters more than the destination”.
Travelling is team work. One can gauge the kind of emotional support a couple draws from each other when they decide to travel together. It also indicates that they are easy on each other. Psychologists call this the emotional connect between the couple and also vouch for the fact that a “couple that travels together, stays together”
When you hit the road as a couple, there’s not much in your control. You have to take on every challenge, be it big or small in your stride in order to be able to move forward, literally and otherwise. This can be a bit difficult for couples who have spent a long time staying in one place. If you find yourself getting cranky and moody, then save it for when you have made a rest stop, not while driving, or even on the aircraft.
On tough terrains and in places where the weather is extreme, there is no room for being sulky and throwing tantrums at each other. You have to work as a team to be able to work their way forward. It becomes almost a matter of survival for them to take the difficulty in to their stride inspite of being mad at each other for something.
Being cooped up in a small space – an aircraft cabin or a car – for long durations does tend to make people a bit antsy, especially if they are not used to travelling together. That being said, experiences like these can make or break your dynamic, and how that plays out is entirely up to you.
Life can be made really interesting if couples decide to move out of their four walls to explore the world a little. The world is a beautiful place with loads of surprises everywhere waiting to be discovered. When you make those discoveries together, it’s truly a one-of-a-kind bonding experience.
The memories of journeys the things you saw and ate, the clothes you wore and bought, the trinkets you collected, will not only bring a smile to your face, but add something special to your relationship – love!
A Few True Stories
I don’t need to keep harping on what ifs to make a point. There are plenty of couples who have travelled the world together, some still are, who have chosen the nomadic life for themselves. Read on about them and maybe they will inspire you to take the plunge into travelling together.
There are other interesting couples who are much older and have adopted travelling successfully after finishing their stint of responsible parenting.
